For over 20 years now, brothers Ali and Basti Schwarz have been moving the masses with their delightfully clever take on dance music - both from the DJ booth and from behind the mixing board. Two decades later, the brothers, known as Tiefschwarz, show absolutely zero signs of slowing, with their future-forward electronic music remaining as influential as ever. Teaming up with Yawk, a fresh faced Berlin artist on the quick trajectory (and kingpin behind the wicked Studio Kreuzberg imprint), the trio have crafted the latest release for Tiefschwarz’s very own Souvenir Music imprint. It’s a double header which shows a vibrancy in their productions whilst retaining the infectious, quirky dancefloor magic the label and artists are loved for. It’s also a rare appearance of the Tiefschwarz boys on their own imprint, and therefore a release that’s absolutely unmissable.

A-side track, ‘North’ is a steady, mind altering slab of weirdo-tech house, with energy levels building and building from the very start. A track that just gets better and better with each passing minute, with more elements being added at the perfect moments. A disjointed bass stab keeps the cut moving forward, with occasional moments where the sounds simply fall of the track into discordant territories (clearly meant to cause the listener to take notice). Truly twisted, groovy and perplexing 4/4 music that will surely lock the dancefloor into a hypnotic state of dancing.

‘South’ adds a bit of light to the EP with a friendlier but equally as dancefloor devastating affair made to capture the moments the sun starts to creep over the horizon. Matching the rising sun, majestic synths grow in strength over layers of incredibly clever percussion, combined the results create a sense of positive, ever-lasting tension for the listener. Mid-way through the track, however, this tension is abruptly cut (before returning) to offer space for each of the perfectly placed sounds to take the spotlight - each element equally as important and exciting as the last.

‘North / South’ captures the strength of all three producers in their purest element. The extended level of expertise the Tiefschwarz brothers have collected over their careers, with a spark of additional imagination from label mate Yawk. Rather than a release of three producers fighting to tell their own individual stories, ‘North / South’ is the organically shared cultivation of three brilliant modern dance music minds agreeing on one simple subject - make them dance, and make it sound absolutely amazing.
